Protecting the Churchill Theatre

The Churchill Theatre is one of Bromley’s most important cultural landmarks, bringing drama, comedy, music and community events to thousands of residents every year.

When the Conservative Council moved to sell the theatre site, many residents were rightly concerned about the future of this much-loved venue. Bromley Liberal Democrats stood with residents to protect the theatre and ensure Bromley would continue to have a theatre in the town centre.

What Liberal Democrats Did

Liberal Democrats worked with residents to demand guarantees for the theatre’s future.

  • We launched a petition signed by thousands of residents calling for the theatre to be protected.
  • We challenged the Conservatives’ plans and demanded the theatre use be safeguarded.
  • We raised the issue publicly so residents’ voices could not be ignored.

Because of this pressure, the Council was forced to guarantee that a theatre will continue to operate on the site.

Why This Should Never Have Happened

The situation should never have arisen.

The Conservatives pushed through the sale after decades of failing to invest properly in the building or fund essential repairs. Instead of taking responsibility, they chose to sell public land.

They also refused to place a covenant on the site guaranteeing it will remain a theatre in perpetuity, meaning future generations do not have cast-iron protection.

Liberal Democrats believe the freehold should have remained in public ownership to properly safeguard the site.

Our Theatre Continues to Thrive

Importantly, the theatre itself was never at risk in the short term.

The current operator, Trafalgar Theatres, continues to run a fantastic programme of productions enjoyed by thousands of residents.

We love and treasure the Churchill Theatre and the cultural life it brings to Bromley.

Liberal Democrats Will Always Fight to Protect Our Cultural Assets

This campaign shows what can happen when residents and Liberal Democrats work together.

While Conservatives handled the process secretively and rushed decisions, Liberal Democrats listened, acted and fought for the community.

We will continue to:

  • Stand up for Bromley’s cultural assets
  • Hold Conservatives to account for years of neglect
  • Protect the places that make our borough special

Bromley deserves leadership that values culture, listens to residents and plans for the long term.
