Reducing Congestion in Beckenham
Congestion is one of the issues residents raise most often with us in Beckenham. For too long, it was not treated as a priority, despite the daily impact on residents, businesses, and air quality. Queues, blocked junctions, and poorly planned parking don’t just cause frustration — they affect road safety and discourage people from shopping locally.
Since being elected in 2022, Liberal Democrat councillors Chloe-Jane Ross and Will Connolly have made tackling congestion in Beckenham Town Centre a clear priority, pushing for practical action rather than accepting the status quo.
Turning Residents’ Concerns into Action
In 2025, we surveyed over 300 Beckenham residents about congestion in and around the High Street. The message was clear: traffic delays are a daily frustration, and residents want targeted, practical improvements rather than vague long-term promises. The most consistent concern raised was poor traffic light coordination, particularly at the junction by Beckenham Junction and near Waitrose.
We brought this residents’ feedback together in a detailed report for council highways officers. This work helped push the council to take action, with officers now working alongside Transport for London and London Borough of Bromley to explore ways to improve traffic flow in Beckenham.
What We’ve Achieved — and What’s Next
After sustained campaigning, we secured the removal of parking bays on Albemarle Road by Beckenham Green, where poorly placed parking was causing bottlenecks and unnecessary congestion at Beckenham Junction.
We also won the reinstatement of controls on the taxi bay opposite Beckenham Green, stopping cars parking there during the day and blocking the left-hand lane towards Beckenham Junction. Both schemes have been approved and are due to be completed this year.
Our work continues, with Council’s Highway’s Officers and TfL to improve traffic light phasing and other measures on the High Street and surrounding junctions, and we will keep pushing for solutions that make Beckenham’s streets safer, cleaner, and easier to use for everyone.
