Take Action on Empty Homes in Bromley

The problem

Across Bromley, homes are sitting empty for years while families struggle to find somewhere to live.

New data shows the number of long-term empty homes in Bromley has risen by 12%. Residents regularly report derelict properties, antisocial behaviour and neglected sites that the Council is too slow to deal with.

Empty homes blight neighbourhoods and waste valuable housing.

Our plan

The Bromley Liberal Democrats are proposing a Housing Sites & Empty Homes Officer to bring unused homes back into use.

This officer would:

  • Identify empty and underused sites for housing
  • Target long-term empty and derelict homes
  • Work with landlords and developers to bring homes back into use
  • Secure government funding for affordable housing

Why this matters

Bringing empty homes back into use can:

  • Provide more homes for local people
  • Reduce spending on temporary accommodation
  • Improve neighbourhoods and tackle antisocial behaviour

Where owners refuse to act, the Council should be prepared to use powers like Empty Dwelling Management Orders or Compulsory Purchase Orders.

Take action

Empty homes should not sit unused while people need housing. The Liberal Democrats will keep pushing the Council to take action and hold them to account for their track record on bringing empty homes back into use.
