Appoint a Disability Equality Champion for London
London should work for everyone. But for many Disabled people, barriers still exist in transport, housing, public spaces and decision-making.
That’s why Liberal Democrats across London are campaigning for the Mayor to appoint a Disability Equality Champion — a senior role focused entirely on improving equality for Disabled Londoners.
Why This Matters
Around 1.2 million Disabled people live in London, and more than 14% of Bromley residents identify as disabled (2021 Census).
Yet Disabled Londoners still face systemic barriers when accessing services, moving around the city, or having their voices heard in decisions that affect their lives.
Disabled People’s Organisations, including Inclusion London, have repeatedly called for a dedicated champion with lived experience of disability who can drive change across City Hall.
Liberal Democrats Leading The Campaign
London Liberal Democrats have been leading the campaign for a Disability Equality Champion.
The London Assembly has twice backed the proposal in motions led by, but the Mayor has so far refused to act.
Bromley Liberal Democrats have also taken action locally. Liberal Democrat councillors successfully passed a motion at Bromley Council supporting the campaign and calling on the Mayor to appoint a Disability Equality Champion for London.
What We’re Calling For
We are urging the Mayor of London to:
- Appoint a senior Disability Equality Champion with authority across the Greater London Authority.
- Ensure the role is held by someone with lived experience of disability.
- Properly resource the role so it can drive real change.
- Require regular reporting to the London Assembly for accountability.
- Work with Disabled People’s Organisations to produce a London Disability Action Plan within six months.
Standing Up For Disability Equality
Disabled Londoners deserve a stronger voice at City Hall and real action to remove the barriers they face.
London Liberal Democrats are leading the campaign, and Bromley Liberal Democrats will keep pushing the Mayor to act.
