I recently attended my first party conference and what an inspiring experience it was! Highlights for me were two of the fringe events - Jo Swinson in conversation with Anna Soubry - in the stunning venue of Merchant Adventurers Hall - and the session led by Siobhan Benita on Knife Crime. I also really enjoyed the debates - especially the one about developing a supporters’ group and proposed changes to the constitution to facilitate this. The quality of contributions - many by people like me attending our first conference - were so powerful that it was sometimes difficult to decide which way to cast my vote. The debate on the final day led by Young Liberals on the subject of unpaid internships was really informative and thought-provoking as was the final speech by Vince Cable.
Only two weeks away from our potential exit from the EU, I came away feeling greatly heartened by realising how many powerful voices there are still determined to do everything in our power to prevent this catastrophe.
All of the above in the incredibly atmospheric setting of the beautiful city of York! It was also good to spend time with members of our local party culminating in a delicious meal on Saturday evening. I am already planning my attendance at the Autumn Conference in Bournemouth in September and would urge all members who haven’t yet attended conference to join me.
