The Metropolitan Police MUST Represent their Community

Data has revealed the Metropolitan Police are woefully short of representing the Black communities they serve: Bromley Lib Dems are calling for action to increase diversity.

London is a spectacularly diverse city, yet the proportion of Black London police officers is a meagre 3.3%. The proportion of Black officers has actually decreased in the past year: only a shocking 1.6% of the 2019-20 intake are Black. This is even more alarming when 13.3% of Londoners identified as Black in the last census.

These statistics show the Government's new officer recruitment has worsened an already damning situation.

Bromley Liberal Democrats demands urgent action. Spokeperson Stuart Benefield said,

"Police forces need to actually reflect the makeup of communities like London. These figures show the government is failing woefully short of that standard. Building trust and confidence among all communities cannot happen without addressing the shocking lack of diversity within this key profession."

The Liberal Democrats are fighting to improve the representation of Black communities throughout our society, including in the police and the judiciary, as part of a proper Race Equality Strategy.
