All Conservative Bromley Borough MPs voted for sewage in our rivers

It's London Rivers Week (23 to 31 Oct), but instead of celebrating the rivers across the capital and in Bromley (rivers Beck, Pool, Quaggy and Ravensbourne), we are disgusted about the Conservatives voting to allow sewage to be dumped in our rivers.

Bromley Lib Dems are calling out Beckenham MP Bob Stewart, Bromley MP Bob Neill and Orpington MP Gareth Bacon who all voted against an amendment to the Environment Bill that banned water companies pumping raw sewage into our rivers last week… a vote that is literally disgusting!

Rivers should be safe for swimming, fishing and sustaining wildlife. They are a precious source of drinking water for some. Shockingly, water companies pumped polluting and harmful raw sewage into water sources over 400,000 times last year. The River Trust has revealed that more than half of England’s rivers are currently failing to pass cleanliness tests due to water companies’ actions.

Rightly so there has been public outrage at MPs voting to allow water companies to continue dumping sewage rather than cleaning up their act. This has forced the Environment Secretary George Eustice to pledge to enshrine in law a new duty to ensure water companies secure a ‘progressive’ reduction. Just how progressive it will be remains to be seen.

The Conservatives don’t care about the environment - when they got to vote, 265 of their MPs voted down the amendment to protect our rivers from sewage - including your MP! Only after public outcry have they backtracked slightly.
