Lib Dems launch clean up after Tory neglect1.42.30pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 13th Jun 2003 Liberal Democrats in Orpington have launched the first two clean up campaigns in a series to highlight the deteriorating state of Bromley Borough since the Conservatives took over control of the Council.
In Orpington Ward Lib Dem councillors Chris Maines, Grace Goodlad and Jenny Powell have launched a "Clean up Ramsden" campaign. In a one hour tour of the area they found dumped cars, piled up dumped rubbish, uncut grass in public areas, graffiti and a smashed phone box. In addition public areas of residential blocks were littered, unmaintained and not cleaned. Cllr Chris Maines said, "It is time that Tory Bromley Council cleaned up their act". Cllr Grace Goodlad added, "Broomleigh also need to recognise that they have a duty to their tenants to maintain a clean and safe environment. I have asked them to deal with the problems we have found on the Ramsden Estate as soon as possible."
In Farnborough and Crofton Lib Dem campaigners Helen Rabbatts and Viv Ross have called for a clean up of large amounts of litter uncovered since a long overdue grass cut in the area between Farnborough Village and the A21. Helen said 'Whilst it's good news the council has finally cut the grass alongside the path, all this litter and graffiti makes our area look so untidy'
Helen and Viv have also called for Tory controlled Bromley Council to deal with the bags of dumped rubbish that have appeared at the bottom of Cherrycot Hill, and to remove them as soon as possible. Viv says "Not only do the bags look terrible, when we visited on Thursday morning, the smell was disgusting". The Lib Dems have launched a poll on dirty Bromley on their website www.bromleylibdems.org.uk
